About Me

Hi, I’m Reem, the voice and creator of One Creative Cook.

I’m a 33-year-old formally trained professional chef living out of a suitcase with my husband, traveling, cooking, and writing this blog.

I've worn various chef hats over the years, including Executive, Head, and Sous Chef of several restaurants in Toronto, Canada. I’ve been cooking professionally for over 15 years and am passionate about all things food!

I also love to travel and have taken extensive trips all over the world with my husband. From getting married on Sairee Beach in Koh Tao, Thailand, to camping across Canada and the United States, we've become seasoned travelers.

I met my husband, working in the same restaurant, shortly after Chef school. We instantly got along and have been inseparable ever since. My passion for cooking and his extensive experience in the front-of-house made us a good match, which eventually led us to co-manage a Toronto restaurant for several years.

Koh Tao, Thailand

The pandemic hit our industry hard, but we luckily found a way to survive. After years of lockdowns and working non-stop to build back business, we got the opportunity to travel again. That’s when we realized we wanted to make exploring the world a lifestyle rather than just a vacation.

Klecha Iraqi Date Cookies

Although I’ve lived most of my life in Canada, I was born during the Gulf War in Baghdad, Iraq. Despite it being a tough time, I have only fond memories of our house with a chicken coop, fruit trees, date palms, and grapevines in the yard. We enjoyed traditional Iraqi food from long-standing family recipes that still influence my cooking today. We left Iraq when I was 5 and settled in Canada by age 7.

Raised by electrical engineer parents, my dad's love for explaining things at the molecular level sparked my scientific approach to cooking and curiosity about how things work. My mom, on the other hand, inspired my love of food from a young age as she often held me while cooking. As I grew up and experimented in the kitchen, my two older brothers were my taste testers and pushed me to follow my passion for cooking by going to chef school.

Over the years I’ve developed a deep knowledge of savory cooking, butchery, and pastry arts, always making everything from scratch. I’ve written numerous recipes and menus that focus on local seasonal ingredients and borrow flavors from all over the world.

The culmination of my upbringing and professional training has led me here, a place where I can hopefully impart some of my knowledge and teach you something new. All while continuing to learn and grow my skills as a cook, blogger, teacher, and traveler.

Wherever you are, make yourself at home. If you need anything, I’d be happy to hear from you or answer any questions you might have!
